Start your Ledger — Secure setup in minutes

A clear, secure walkthrough for initializing your Ledger hardware device and Ledger Live.

Why setup correctly matters

Your Ledger device stores private keys offline so you can manage crypto without exposing secrets to the internet. A careful setup — using official software, a secure PIN, and a safely stored recovery phrase — makes your assets resilient to common risks like phishing or device theft.

Quick setup — 7 steps

1

Unbox and inspect

Open your Ledger device. Confirm packaging seals and verify the model against the order. Only proceed with the physical device you purchased from a trusted source.

2

Download Ledger Live

From the official site, download Ledger Live on your computer or mobile. Always verify the domain and file signatures when available. Ledger Live is the companion app that talks to your device.

3

Connect the device

Connect the Ledger to your computer or phone using the included cable. Follow on-screen prompts in Ledger Live to pick your device model and start initialization.

4

Create a PIN

Choose a PIN you can remember but is not trivially guessable. This PIN protects the device from unauthorized physical use; never reveal it to anyone.

5

Write down your recovery phrase

Your recovery phrase (24 words) is the only backup for your wallet. Write it on the provided card or on a secure medium, store it offline, and never photograph or share it.

6

Install apps and add accounts

Use Ledger Live's Manager to install cryptocurrency apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Then add accounts in Ledger Live and synchronize by following on-screen instructions.

7

Test with a small transfer

Before moving large amounts, send a small test transaction to confirm everything works as expected. Verify addresses on your device screen match the app display.

Best security practices

Use only official software downloads, enable firmware updates from the device itself, and never enter your recovery phrase into a computer or website. Be skeptical of unsolicited support requests and verify URLs carefully. Consider storing your recovery phrase in a secure physical location or using a durable metal backup solution for long-term safety.

When to contact support

If packaging looks tampered with, the device behaves unexpectedly during initialization, or you suspect a compromise, stop and reach out to official support channels. Do not provide your recovery phrase to anyone claiming to be support.
